Being deployed overseas like Afghanistan, or wherever it maybe that the military sends us could get a little overwhelming at times, and you try your best to let time fly by.
You always think about what everyone is doing back home, and wishing you weren’t deployed to a country that has bad internet service with no StarBucks, I mean for some people that’s how they feel.
I want to talk about deployment overseas and give you ideas of what I did to make my time go by.
I hope this helps out for you all, because it sure helped me pass some time!
Getting Through The Day
When deployed overseas, months feel like years, days like months, and minutes feel like hours. For me, it felt that way because I was always thinking about the time and what everyone was doing back home in the states.
I should’ve been worrying about getting through my days and not worrying so much what my friends and family were doing.
Yes it’s good to check on your family of course, but it makes it harder every time you call and have to hang up.
I tried to call my family at least once a week just to let them know I was ok, and to see how they were holding up.
It’s always good to call family, especially if you’re married, you want to make sure your spouse is ok because holding down the household isn’t an easy task.
I suggest if you want your day to go by, try not to call everyday because it is going to make things more difficult if you can’t make a call during the times when you lose phone privileges or internet.
Family is key, but you have to remember if you want your time to go by, focus on the mission and take care of your family who is fighting right beside you.
Finding Ways To Pass The Time
When I was in Afghanistan, I was always looking for ways to pass the time, it became hard because there was only so much we could do.
We weren’t at home where we could just walk around outside and everything was cool, we were in a country where we weren’t welcomed.
So around my Combat Outpost (COP), we had a lumber yard that we were able to have access to if we needed to build anything for our rooms or for our camp.
I was in that lumber yard a lot, because the more I stayed busy making things to improve my room, whether it be a book shelf or a dresser for my clothes, the faster the time went by because I wasn’t thinking of anything but work, work, work, work, work.
Not only was I able to pass the time, I was able to improve my carpentry skills at the same time.
There were many men I was with that had a whole bunch of different skills, some were good at plumbing work, some were good on vehicle mechanics, and some were good operating heavy equipment.
I always surrounded myself with them when they were told to do a task involving their skill set, because I wanted to learn.
I figured I had nothing but time out there, so why not learn a new skill to benefit me when I get back home.
I was like a mosquito in their ear always asking questions!
The good thing is that they didn’t mind teaching me because they knew once I learned, they would tell me to do the task and not them.
I really didn’t mind though because the more tasks I had the better.
So if you are finding it hard to pass the time, try and learn a new skill from the people around you, it’s only going to help you in the future.
Hitting The Gym
Hitting the gym is everyones go to plan to pass the time because nothing beats a little heavy lifting.
The great thing at my outpost, we set challenges who can lift up to a thousand pounds. It was called the “thousand pound challenge”. I’m sure everyone has heard of this, or even done it before.
No it wasn’t lifting a thousand pounds one shot, it was made up of events like squats, bench press and deadlifts.
You add the total weight lifted with the three exercises, and who ever reaches a thousand pounds first won bragging rights.
Sounds pretty easy huh? It really wasn’t unless you are just built naturally like the Hulk.
We did that because it pushed a lot of our soldiers to participate and hit the gym to try and achieve those challenges.
Everyone wanted to win, and it was great to see the motivation and determination from everyone.
It paid off for us because it made us stronger and built tuff for the missions that came ahead of us.
Our gym wasn’t anything spectacular, it looked similar to the one above. We didn’t care though because we dealt with what we had, and it worked out well.
This is one of the little things that made me miss home, a nice functional gym.
The gym is definitely one of the best places to pass the time, and the benefits of that is getting you that beach body you’ve always wanted.
Always have a partner in the gym that you know can motivate you and spot you without hesitation, because that is the key to becoming that beast.
I believe its called “swole mates”.
The key to deployment is trying your best to not just sit in your room and do nothing, that is the worse thing to do if you are trying to pass the time.
Get out there and get to know your battle buddies, anything is better than sitting in your room.
Start Your Online Military Training
I suggest if you’re trying to chase down that next rank, deployment is the best way to knock out the important trainings like SSD and correspondence courses.
These will help you get ahead of your peers and cross out one less training for you to do when you get back home.
The military these days are not only going for PT Studs, they are looking more into education and military schools, so if you have that under your belt, you are golden.
Do as much online training and online college if you could to help you improve not only your military, but your civilian life as well.
