Being deployed overseas like Afghanistan could get a little overwhelming at times and you try hard to let time fly. You always think about what everyone is doing back home and wishing you weren’t deployed.I want to talk about deployment overseas and give you ideas of what I did to make my time go by.
Getting through the day
When deployed overseas months feel like years, days like months, and minutes like hours. For me, it felt that way because I was always just thinking about the time and what everyone was doing back home in the states.
I should’ve been worrying about getting through my days and not worrying so much what my friends and family were doing. Yes it’s good to check on your family of course but it makes it harder every time you call and have to hang up.
Then it will feel like time isn’t going anywhere again. I tried to call my family at least once a week just to let them know I was ok and to see how they were holding up. It’s always good to call family especially if you’re married, you want to make sure your spouse is ok because holding down the household isn’t an easy task.
I suggest if you want your day to go by, try not to call everyday because it is going to make things more difficult if you can’t make a call during the times when you lose phone privileges or internet. Family is key but you have to remember if you want your time to go by, focus on the mission and take care of your family who is fighting right beside you.
Finding ways to pass the time
When I was in Afghanistan, I was always looking for ways to pass the time. It became kind of hard because there was only so much we could do. We weren’t at home where we could just walk around outside and everything was cool, we were in a country where we weren’t welcomed.
So around my Combat Outpost (COP), we had a lumber yard that we were able to have access to if we needed to build anything for our rooms or for our camp. I was in that lumber yard a lot because the more I stayed busy making things to improve my room whether it be a book shelf or a dresser for my clothes, the faster the time went by because I wasn’t thinking of anything but work, work, work, work, work.
Not only was I able to pass the time, I was able to improve my carpentry skills at the same time. There were many men I was with that had a whole bunch of different skills. Some were good at plumbing work, some were good on vehicle mechanics and some were good operating heavy equipment.
I always surrounded myself with them when they were told to do a task involving their skill set because I wanted to learn. I figured, I had nothing but time out there so why not learn a new skill to benefit me when I get back home.
I was like a mosquito in their ear always asking questions. The good thing is that they didn’t mind teaching me because they knew once I learned, they would tell me to do the task and not them. I really didn’t mind though because the more tasks I had the better.
Hitting the gym
Hitting the gym is everyones go to plan to pass the time because nothing beats a little heavy lifting. The great thing at my outpost, we set challenges who can lift up to a thousand pounds. It was called the “thousand pound challenge”. I’m sure everyone has heard of this or done it before.
No it wasn’t lifting a thousand pounds one shot, it was made up of squats, bench press and deadlifts. You add the total weight lifted with the three exercises and who ever reaches a thousand pounds first won bragging rights. Sounds pretty easy huh? It really wasn’t unless you are just built naturally like the Hulk.
We did that because it pushed a lot of our soldiers to participate and hit the gym to try and achieve those challenges. Everyone wanted to win and it was great to see the motivation and determination. It paid off for us because it made us stronger and built tuff for the missions that came ahead of us.
Our gym wasn’t anything spectacular, it looked similar to the one above. We didn’t care though because we dealt with what we had and it worked out well. This is one of the little things that made me miss home, a nice functional gym.
The gym is definitely one of the best places to pass the time and the benefits of that is getting you that beach body you’ve always wanted. Always have a partner in the gym that you know can motivate you and spot you without hesitation because that is the key to becoming that beast. I believe its called “swole partners”.
The key to deployment is trying your best to not just sit in your room and do nothing, that is the worse thing to do if you are trying to pass the time. Get out there and get to know your battle buddies, anything is better than sitting in your room.
Start your online military training
I suggest if you’re trying to chase down that next rank, deployment is the best way to knock out the important training like SSD and correspondence courses.
These will help you get ahead of your peers and cross out one less training for you to do when you get back home.
Bored and out of options on what to do to pass time?
If the things I have stated above don’t interest you, maybe making a little extra money will. If you really don’t want to hit the gym or anything like that and you love to be on your computer because it’s more fun, I’m going to give you a suggestion that could help you make money.
It’s called affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing is a way to promote other peoples products and make good commissions off from it. You don’t have to do anything but write reviews on the products and post it on your website and if someone purchases it off your link you get paid.
You don’t have a website and you don’t know how to get the link? It’s ok I got you!
A program I use called Wealthy Affiliate will help you with the website problem and everything else you need to know about affiliate marketing. The great thing is Wealthy Affiliate is free to become a member and allows you to start up your very own website for free as well.
Dang! Free!! Nothing beats free!
Doing affiliate marketing will defiantly pass your time and help expand your knowledge at the same time. You don’t have to be great at using computers because Wealthy Affiliate will guide you step-by-step to success.
Only reason I’m saying that is because you got up to this point in my article and I never knew how to do anything like this in my life. I never knew how to write articles or reviews but here I am today doing it.
This is the greatest thing I have ever discovered. It allows me to make extra money and if I wanted to I could do this as a full time job and work from home.
If you really wanted to, you could do affiliate marketing and the military and all that extra money being made could go to whatever you want. Just knowing you have a fallback plan if the military doesn’t work for you is a bitter sweet relief.
I hope you enjoyed my article and if you have any questions or comments please feel free to leave them below and I will get back to you. If you want to contact me you could do so through WeatlhyAffiliate.com (here is the link to my profile).
Thank you so much for stopping by.
